I know I joked about not moving somewhere cold...but it is really pretty. Steve received his reassignment location today - to Fort Collins, Colorado. I don't think it will take much to convince me. We are looking into all the factors though before we accept the position, stuff like cost of living, housing expenses, job market (for me), etc.

It is a big and scary step for us. Fort Collins is 1,276 miles from "home" and granparents. If you think of it please pray for us for wisdom as we make this decision.

A "Best Friend's" Wedding

I had the joy of photographing one of my favorite people's wedding back in September. Jessica, the bride, and I were best friends way back in the 5th/6th grade. I was elated and a touch nervous when she asked me to photograph her wedding. I enlisted the help of my neighbor and current best friend (one of several) Sarah to help me shoot the wedding. Sarah, coincidentally, used to be Jessica's next door neighbor when we were all in high-school.

We had a blast shooting this wedding! I hope you enjoy the photos!

There were of course tons more photos. These are just some of my favorites. Oh and I forgot to mention I did all the centerpieces, bouquets and corsages. I am a glutton for punishment but it was so much fun hanging out in Jessica's old house with her and her sisters in the lead up to the wedding - so many memories.

All of these photos were taken with borrowed cameras - special thanks to Laura and AJ who lent us theirs. Thank you Sarah for being the other me! There are photos that I can't tell who took them aside from how they were saved. Also a big thanks to Jessica and Jake for allowing us to be such a special part of your day! Congrats you two!

Looking Forward

We are looking forward to seeing what 2012 holds for our family- albeit with a small touch of nervousness. I had mentioned in previous posts some time ago about the feeling of being windbound. A nautical reference to winds blowing but a ship is unable to sail whether by contrary currents or the wind is blowing in the wrong direction.

Well we can see the winds starting to shift. Soon we should be able to begin charting our course again. We found out the Monday before Thanksgiving that the USDA research center that Steve works at is closing. Now we are waiting for Steve's duty reassignment.

There are several locations in Texas but it is possible we could be relocating out of state as well - which while is a bit exciting is also where the nervousness sets in; the thoughts of winters equating copious amounts of snow and ice give me pause.

I think if Steve gets a duty reassignment in Texas he will take it. If he gets something like Fargo, North Dakota - likely not. I am sure Fargo is a lovely place- in summer. *grin*

Joking aside, Texas is home and San Antonio is our first pick. We are also looking for jobs there in addition to waiting for reassignment. Why San Antonio? 1) Steve's dad/aunts/cousins live there 2) Mexican food still resembles actual Mexican food 3) I have lived there -briefly- before. 4) I technically have a teaching job lined up at a private school.

The school is holding a position for me. A teacher is leaving at the end of this school year so I have until the beginning of May until they post the position and start looking for other applicants. The position is with an accredited school and I could earn a teaching certificate there - which is a major plus. The downside is that I am not sure if the salary is enough to support our family of four. San Antonio comes down to Steve finding a job too.

In the meantime we are both still looking and waiting and packing - again.

So we are looking forward to 2012 but are thankful for all the many blessings 2011 brought (and even the not so good things). Thank you all most of all for your kind words, encouragement, and sticking around while I have been on hiatus. Hopefully we will be settled into some new digs, in a new town very soon and I can get back to some serious nesting.

School Days: Montessori and Toddler School

Jade started Kindergarten last Monday. She had a blast and is still having a great time. We are trying out a public Montessori school and thus far we are very pleased.

Here she is with her little "First Day" sign. There are several free and for purchase versions online. I went with the ones from HowDoesShe?. You have to subscribe for them but it is worth it...there are several other free printables.

Lucas (still two) and I have started "school" too. Largely because he wants to be just like big sister and was mad he couldn't stay with her at school. Super cute. So we have started little lessons and before someone freaks out about how I am "homeschooling" a two-year old. We are playing, reading and singing. I am not buying a curriculum or anything like that but I do purchase learning items...largely from various dollar stores in the area.

Some things that are getting a ton of play time lately with Lucas are:

Foam alphabet and numbers puzzles I picked up two - the uppercase alphabet and the numbers - at the Dollar Tree. They are $1 each.

Educational Magnet Sets also from Dollar Tree. These sold out fast but I was able to pick up the colors shapes one. We use it for sorting shapes and colors...Jade uses them too for sorting to the words and playing school. It was worth the $1 since it serves so many purposes.

MULA Abacus from Ikea - $9.99. I had Steve's aunt pick up one in Houston for us when Jade was less than a year old. It has held up for over four years...largely because she never really played with it. Showed no interest. Lucas on the other hand L-O-V-E-S it. He counts to ten on every line. Then he has me count to one hundred. He screams, "hundred, hundred" until I count it out. He literally will play with it in 30 minute blocks of time.

These book and CD sets are amazing. Available at TwinSisters for $5 each. I found Wheels on the Bus and Old MacDonald at Dollar General for $2 each, not bad for a book and CD.

We don't have a particular schedule and a good deal of our days are spent out and about. I just thought I would share what tools I am now using to educate my youngest half-pint.

Whirlwind Summer...Whew

I am sorry I didn't get the rest of our summer staycation photos up. We are still waiting with the rest of the country to see what happens with the federal budget - which for us means the potential of my husband being laid-off work.

For those of you unaware I was laid-off two years ago and while I have worked odd jobs (daycare teacher, nanny, etc) I have pretty much been cooling my heels watching my two kiddos. So the prospects of us both being unemployed in the near future had/has us a little worried.

Anyway so the gist is that we were praying for opportunities to save money and cut expenses as much as possible. Prayers were answered by way of one of my best friends (Sarah). She recently purchased a duplex...super cute duplex built in the late 1940's (we think).

She was having trouble locating a renter...we needed a cheaper rental...a perfect fit! We are saving a little under $300 a month on housing expenses, and I am estimating another $100 or so on electric.

Right after my last post I began packing, sorting, purging, donating, garage selling, and then finally moving. It ate up the entire month of July. We moved in August 1st and are now spending our time unpacking, purging, donating and repairing things. I have been doing some light construction projects (sorry I didn't take before pics, the camera is packed away).

The place is suffice to say much, much, much smaller but it is quirky in that old house kind of way. I am taking advantage of the quirks and decorating far more boho than in the last place. As things start to come together I will start posting pics of the house.

All of this whilst getting Jade prepped to start a new school. We are giving a new charter school a try, it is a public school that follows the Montessori philosophy.

Stay-cation 2011: Day 1

From here on out I am going to call it the lazy-cheater-pants vacation. Steve took off an entire week of work; I am off from my nanny gig too. And we are doing all the stuff that we mean to do but haven't because of "fill in the blank" reasons - too far...too crowded...not enough time, money, energy...etc.

Day 1:
We went to see Rio at the discount movie theater - Lucas' first movie. We took advantage of Cinemark's Reel Family Time discount tickets (75 cents per ticket) so the four of us got in for $3, which is pretty amazing but is only available on Mondays.

We then went home for naps and got up for an early dinner at Church's Chicken - did I mention I am not cooking this week - what it is my vacation too - ha! Then it was on to the park. As you can see the kids had a blast.

We got there around six o'clock and stayed until right before the sun started to set.

We went to the newer playground equipment first.

Then we headed over to see the ducks.

Then the kids wanted to go to the smaller set of nearly, abandoned equipment, which was pretty worn...but they had it all to themselves. Fun day!

Then on Tuesday we went to the beach...another post :).

I highly recommend the lazy-cheater-pants vacation!

Windbound

Windbound – A condition wherein the ship is detained in one particular station by contrary winds

This is where I feel we as a family are at being held by contrary winds. We are waiting on word as to whether my husband, Steve, will have a job come October. We are now only three months out and are frustrated that we are unable to move. We are waiting to know which way to turn our sails, to know if we will be at full sail, tacking into the wind, or battening down for a storm.

It stinks to be held in one place, waiting for something so wildly out of our control and not knowing what action to take. We are holding steady...and are certain no matter what we will be okay.

I have not forgotten the blog. Just being in such a lengthy holding pattern hasn't left me wanting to do much in the way of home projects. At least not in reality but in wishing and clipping I am still going strong over at Pinterest. Oh and my "new" camera broke in May and I have been trying to get it fixed...or replaced under warranty but it looks like that isn't going to happen. It may be October before I feel like I can buy a new camera.

We are going on a stay-cation this next week and I am hoping to borrow my future sis-in-laws camera to document it. I am working out our itinerary and likely will post about that later today.

Hello, my name is Sami and I am addicted to Pinterest.

My absence here can be wholey blamed on that website. I have been busy pinning and re-pinning images. I am loving it as a way to catalog and organize inspiration images without taking up real estate on my hard drive.

I largely have been pinning to party planning boards. I am planning way ahead for our 10th wedding anniversary and the next round of kids birthdays. I thought I would go ahead and share the kids' party theme boards with you now more to show off how awesome I think Pinterest is. I will share our anniversary party with you later since it will be in December.

I decided this year after Jade's party to start planning way ahead since I like doing crazy little details. The only problem with that is time. I usually run out of time to do/make all that I planned. Lucas' next party (January) will be pirate themed and Jade's (March) will be mermaid themed.

Dream Skinny Wardrobe: Zara

I am still working on whittling my waist down and have been making small strides but have not reached the next milestone goal - frustratingly.

This week I think I am over the plateau and lost over one pound. I am trying to re energize myself to push on to my next incremental goal. I am seeking some princess-ly inspiration.

I don't think I would wear the pleated dress...pleats and I have a troubled history...involving bad poly-blend school uniforms...*shudder*. It looks lovely on the Duchess and I love the price under $90! I had heard of Zara before but hadn't taken the time to look at their website until now. It will most certainly be a place I return to once I reach my goal weight and here are are a few reasons why:

Teacups & Tiaras

I can't just let a Royal Wedding pass without doing something to commemorate the occasion. I thought I would share part of my teacup collection.

I picked three of my favorites from a much larger collection. The small demitasse cup was a gift from one of my best-est friends ever and it is an antique. The rest of my teacups date mostly hail from the 1930-40's. I think the black and gold one up top is my all-time favorite and it often takes front and center when displayed. I love the detail on the inside of the red cup.

Mixed with the cups is the tiara I wore at my wedding...what can I say, I was 21 when I got married...it seems a little much now, not quite ten years later. There is also some other jewelry I wore at my wedding and a vintage brooch I picked up for a friend's wedding some years back.

On Friday morning I will be up at the crack of dawn watching Prince William wed Catherine Middleton. I will be watching with Jade and one of her little friends. We will be eating scones and drinking tea. I might even crown myself queen for a day and wear my tiara.

Sewing Groove

Life has been getting in the way of blogging recently; I seriously don’t know how some of you manage to run a house, complete large-ish projects and blog about it. Instead of doing anything that requires manual labor…I decided to tackle the impressively large sewing pile…and I started small…

Disclaimer: I am not a seamstress…and really have no idea what I am doing. I doubt, I will ever be writing any “real” tutorials for sewing projects because about 90% of the time I am flying blind. I will however share the general steps I follow to complete the project…for those of you who are curious…

… here is a recently completed project:

The steps I followed:
1) I traced an oven mitt on my fabric and cut out mitt shaped pieces of fabric.
2) I cut out batting
3) I pinned the batting between two pieces of fabric.
4) I hand quilted in contrasting thread around the patterned side
5) I hand embroidered the “G” monogram – just because I wanted to.
6) I machine quilted the reverse side (not shown: aqua fabric with pink contrasting thread)
7) With right sides together I pinned the entire mitt and “slowly” stitched around the whole piece.
8) Turned it right side out.
9) Pinned some ribbon on the edge and hand stitched it in place.

The floral fabric is the same I used on my Anthropologie, knock-off table runner I made for my daughter’s 5th birthday party. I still have some of this fabric left and am considering making some pretty hot pads/trivets. I also would love to make a coordinating apron…but that might be down the road…after I get some more experience under my belt. : )

A French Fete...for a Five Year Old.

Well Jade's party went very well...with the birthday girl exclaiming to Steve "this is the best birthday party ever." I got plenty of pictures of the spread right before guests started arriving...and then I sat the camera down and we didn't pick it back up until Jade was blowing out the candles. Somehow a house full of kids and their parents keeps one very busy - lol. I hope you enjoy our Madeline in Paris themed birthday party...

Anyone over five ate off of fine china...yup for realz...and it made some parents flinch a bit until I explained that I none of the pieces cost over $1...thrift stores rock.

I hadn't taken off the plastic wrap off the pastries yet when I took these...but we ate croissants, chocolate sables, palmiers (called orejas locally), lemon cupcakes, chocolate cake, Brie, grapes and baguettes. The only food left at the end of the party were croissants, half a baguette and cake.

The cake was topped with a Eiffel Tower souvenir picked up for me from one of my BFFs in 1998...the senior Paris trip I wasn't allowed to go on...note the slight hint of bitterness in my type? ha.

Moving on...I wish I had gotten a better picture of this little shelf...but alas all the rest came out blurry - sigh. The dispenser held lemonade for the kids. We had water and soda available for the adults as well (there was also beer in a cooler outside...shh...). The flowers on the top of the cabinet are real miniature roses but the rest of the flowers here and on the table are all silk...largely because they are relatively cheap. The lemons are real though. ;)

There are a couple photos that didn't come out that have me bummed...one is Jade in her yellow Madeline dress...it was too, too perfect but getting her to sit still on her birthday so she is in frame...or not a giant blur is next to impossible. She also changed into a little dress her Grandmother got her for her birthday.

It was fine...she went outside and played her heart out...ignore the Thomas the Train sticker on her chest - no idea...lol. She could barely contain herself as everyone sang to her. :) I had a blast...and she did too...and secretly I am thinking that I might have my own Madeline party for my next birthday.

Anyway my fellow Anthropologie obsessed friends might notice the table runner looks a bit familiar. I had purchased a couple checked scarves for this party...and then Anthro came out with these:

I liked the way it looked so I copied it...with an old pillow case. My version cost $2.40 for the scarf, pillowcase and embroidery floss. I like it as a table runner better. :)

It will definitely find a home on our table again and another thing I got for the party that I am totally digging and is likely going to become more permanent is the striped curtain...

On to the Next "Milestone"

Tuesday was my weekly weigh-in and I reached a "major" milestone in my journey...I have lost 10% of my start weight. Some of you might remember several weeks ago I posted about my weight loss goals well here is a recap with new items crossed off the list.

1) 5lb loss = 155lbs - COMPLETED
2) 5% start weight loss or 8 lbs. – COMPLETED
3) 10lb loss = 150lbs - COMPLETED
4) 10% of start weight or 16lb. loss = 144lbs - COMPLETED
5) 20lb. loss = 140lbs
6) 25lbs or roughly the weight I was when I got married = 135lbs
7) Reach the high-end of my healthy weight range for a 5'1" person = 132lb
8) 30lb loss = 130lbs.

Somethings you might notice about my goals: First is that they are relatively small...and each are certainly attainable within a couple weeks of each other. It helps keep me motivated. Second is that I stop at 130...I honestly don't know where I want to be...some of that will depend on how I feel...what size dress I am in...and so on.

I am gearing up for Jade's French themed birthday party and there is a ton of things - like cleaning house - that I still need to do. I will be taking pictures as I get ready over the next few days. Hopefully I will have some teaser shots too. :)

Dream Kitchen

I love the floors, gray cabinets, the Moroccan tile, the sconces, the exposed beams and even the turquoise teapot. I wish I could find pictures of the rest of this kitchen. To see how they addressed storage and where they stuck the fridge. If anyone knows where this image came from please let me know in the comments.

My dream kitchen wouldn't be too large. I am all about an efficient work triangle...the fridge in my kitchen would be directly opposite the oven. Next to it would be a pantry door similar to this one:

I would not require it to be arched but I would like this tone of wood and the pantry would be a walk-in to accomodate my crazy stockpiling ways as well as appliance and less used items.

On the wall with the sink I would like to have open shelves flanking a window. I like having things accessible and easy to reach. I love this idea from DIY with ADD, incorporating a pot rack into open shelving. It would be the perfect place to display my copper bottom pots and pans, oven-mits, and so on.

Ideally, I would also like a place that I could display some framed family recipes (photocopies if my mom won't share) similar to this or maybe even hanging on the walls behind the shelves.

Dream Kitchen and Weekly WW update. ;)

Our hardrive crashed and a ton of images are locked on that hardrive...Steve will be able to retrieve them but it will be this weekend. I also lost some of my draft posts in Live Writer...since they weren't in a separate folder. I was working on a post about my dream kitchen...but it is gone...and then yesterday I found this photo which comes so close it is eerie.

I don't remember the source (sorry). I absolutely love the tile...gorgeous right? I had a couple other draft posts that are a complete loss...but it's not a big deal I will just redo them - just not in the same order.

Speaking of loss...I have lost more weight...wahoo! I am down another 2lbs. Which puts me at just under 15lbs total. I should reach my 10% loss goal next week...I will let you know next Wednesday if I have made it.

I have dropped two dress sizes from a 14/16 to a 10/12. (misses/petites) It is great but it produces a bit of a knundrum. 1) I want to look my best now. 2) Anything over size 12 make it look like I am drowning in fabric. 3) My goal dress size is a 6/8. 4) I don't want to spend money on a temporary wardrobe.

I make no secret that I shop at the thrift store but even then it is easy to get carried away by "great" prices and buy more than necessary. I started shopping about two weeks ago and have started my interum wardrobe. And proving I am quite possibly the biggest dork ever I came up with a genius solution for jeans and picked up one pair boys 16H jeans for $4.

I am only 5 feet tall and considering that my 9 year old nephew is just an inch shorter than me...well...I figured...boys husky jeans might work...and I was right...added bonuses include: hidden adjustable waistbands and that I might get hand-me downs from my nephew...haha!

Favorite Friday and Over Analyzing Myself Again

I want to share with you a favorite friend of mine...and her Etsy shop. Kat and I were BFF's in high school we won't discuss when or how long ago that was…but let’s just say it was before the term BFF was common place in our vernacular. In other words we have known each other quite a while. Kat has always been super creative but she has been out doing herself lately with her jewelry creations. Okay, so now onto the part that you can skip…but I do have a question at the end.

First, there are a variety of things going on here…nothing too crazy dramatic…just stuff…and large projects are on hold again…as we wait on the Federal Budget to pass…so we know what the heck we are going to be doing…or if Steve will have a job at the end of this fiscal year.

So instead of letting my imagination or fear run wild with the possibilities the future holds, I sit analyzing myself and of course my personal style – some of that is because I am losing weight and I am in the unique position of acquiring an entirely new wardrobe once I reach my goal. *grin* But also while I have been working on my Dream Home posts I have begun to feel like while I liked what I was choosing was it really me…something seemed off…so I am becoming introspective again…so please bear with me…

Favorites Friday – A Working Loo

No time again today for a Favorites Friday…

Our landlord finally made it back from two months overseas and has sent over a plumber to fix the broken pipe under the house. So after seven weeks of a semi-working bathroom it is finally going to get fixed this weekend – WAHOO! I guess that is my favorites for this Friday. Although I am hoping they won’t have to completely tear up our bathroom.

Longing for Summer and the Beach!

Our beach is about to get hit by Spring Break…so we won’t be taking the family because of all those “crazy” kids…

I will say that it was only “a couple” years ago I would hit the beach purposely on Spring Break…but for the volleyball tourneys…there of course couldn’t be any other reason…;)

So we will wait to go until later and maybe we will take some balloons. :)

Almost Five

In about a month Jade is turning five. Next year she will be beginning Kindergarten…which is making me a bit sad…and happy at the same time. We have been discussing what she wants for her birthday this year. Last year Jade hosted three little girls to a ballerina themed party and they had a blast.

This year after many changes of mind on her part – Iron Man was a huge contender – Jade settled on Madeline as her character of choice.

She loves the books and she watched one of the DVD’s until it was worn out. Yesterday, our thrift store was having a 50% everything sale for President’s Day. This is one of those moments that I know the man upstairs pays attention to the little things…the trivial…even a little girl’s birthday party. I found a little yellow dress with a white peter pan collar.

I also picked up some Eiffel Tower paper napkins at Marshal’s on clearance. We are planning on having 3-4 little girls again and of course family.

I don’t know why but I often start with favors first. Favors are a fun way to reinforce a theme. The story of Madeline starts with, “An old house in Paris covered in vines”, and that is where our party will finish…with these sweet favor boxes (click on the images for source information).

I will do the cutting but I will have Jade help me draw vines on the walls. Inside, will be some Madeline hat cookies like these. Pink Tea

Activities will include: Reading “Madeline”, painting on canvas in smocks, and I am hoping to have a mime.

The menu will be French but very kid friendly. Mini croissant sandwiches, grapes, crackers and cheese, and possibly crepes.

Decorations will include print outs of vintage maps of Paris like these (via flickr), and that is as far as I have gotten. There are so many ideas but nothing has just clicked as right.

There will of course be a cake and it will be topped by a mini Eiffel Tower souvenir. I am also toying with the idea of having a croqueembouche as a secondary desert option…and just to be pretty. I’d love to hear your ideas.

The Fun & Funny

This weekend was all about the fun. I took Jade to a local carousel. Her first ride and since she is still too little to ride by herself I didn’t get any pictures. :( We rode twice and it was the best $4 I have ever spent.

The carousel happens to be inside a mall about 30 minutes from our home. So we also did some window shopping for her a flower girl dress. She tried on several non-contenders in loud colors…orange with hot pink sequins - just for fun.

That was the fun…and while we were in the dress shop a tween stopped me…giggling said, “You look like Victoria from Twilight”. Which made me laugh…out loud…in the middle of the boutique. It was really funny. So then while we were poking around looking at jewelry in another shop the sales girl, politely asks if we need help. I return with we are just browsing. She turns to go and the abruptly turns back and touches my hair.

Which I know sounds really weird but it is a cultural/evil eye/jealousy thing. So I am expecting the typical, “you have pretty hair” but nope I get “I’m sorry I had to touch your hair…It reminds me of the vampire in Twilight. you know Victoria?” Too, too funny!

It is all still cracking me up today. If you are one of those peeps who haven’t a clue about Twilight at all, well here is a photo of Victoria (played by Rachelle Lefevre)

And here is me…without the benefit of a professional makeup artist and photographer and with about 25 more pounds to lose. ;). This is my natural hair color…I love it and always have. My hair is decidedly less curly than my apparent doppelganger’s. I also have the “inability to tan” going for me in the whole, “you so look like a vampire”, thing.

This photo was taken by me…looking at the reflection in a mirror in my bathroom…and trust this was the best of the lot. I have read a couple of the books but haven’t watched the movies…and was completely unaware…I was wearing all black (which isn’t unusual at all for me)…and the top definitely was a tank top…which may have “helped” me look the…um…part.

What is odd is that I have peacock feather earrings, chain necklace and a cuff watch…and even weirder…

…I have a shirt like this one (for St. Patrick’s Day). Dang, if only I had known I would have been Victoria for Halloween, :/. All I would need is a faux-fur pelt, a curling iron, red contacts, vampire teeth and body glitter. But at least I already have a plan for next year. Now, I just need to find some others to turn…er…I mean vamp-ire it up with me…hehe!

Incidentally , I am loving Rachelle Lefevre on the new show, Off the Map…but her character is, from what I can tell, marked for an early demise. :(

Okay, so back to my hair…I have a question for you. This is the longest I have ever had it and my mom is totally nagging me to cut it. Here is my photo again for reference.

Favorite Friday: Weight Loss Tools

This week is going to be a little different. I thought I would share about my weight loss journey and some of my favorite weight loss tools and resources I am using and even some that I am wishing for.

Some general background, about seven years ago I plugged in my weight and height information into a Body Mass Index (BMI) calculator and got a score of 31. Which is considered obese…I was honestly shocked and the very next week I signed up for Weight Watchers (WW). I went from 164lbs to 140lbs in a couple months and then I got pregnant (doh)…so fast forward through two pregnancies with a cumulative six months of bed-rest, two c-sections and two family members with cancer (dad and sister), two rounds of layoffs (in entirely different industries) and my weight slowly over the last seven years had crept back up to 160.

Which for my height*, 5’1”, equals a BMI of 30…also considered obese.

If you are curious as to what your BMI is I have installed a widget in the side bar at the bottom. ;)

Disappointed, for allowing myself to get back to this point…I again have enrolled in WW and am using their new Points Plus program and am enjoying it far more than the old points system. WW is just one part of my overall plan for losing weight.

WW encourages members to set goals for themselves and here are mine and I will update these as I complete them:

1) 5lb loss = 155lbs - COMPLETED
2) 5% start weight loss or 8 lbs. – COMPLETED
3) 10lb loss = 150lbs
4) 10% of start weight or 16lb. loss = 144lbs
5) 20lb. loss = 140lbs (the magic pregnancy inducing weight...well can't happen this time...I made sure of it) ;)
6) 25lbs or the weight I was when I got married = 135lbs
7) Reach the high-end of my healthy weight range for a 5'1" person = 132lb
8) 30lb loss = 130lbs.

After I reach 130 I am not 100% sure where I will want to be. I am thinking about 110-115lbs but in reality I think it may come down to how clothes fit rather than weight that will determine my final goal weight.

I joined WW while they had free registration – which is still going on. They have membership options for everyone including an online option. I joined weekly meetings for accountability purposes – it helps seeing familiar faces week after week and celebrating milestones with them. :) Click on the Points Plus Logo below for more information.

Honestly, I was very hesitant about returning to WW. The first reason being that I didn’t like the old points program (based on a formula that scored foods according to calorie count and fat content). The problem with the old program was that fruit often scored higher than a 100 calorie processed food pack. For example a banana was about 2 points where as a 100 calorie snack pack of chocolate wafers was 1. Which is better for you nutritionally?

But then I saw that WW had come up with a new points program. It is now based on a formula that calculates the nutritional value of the food item. The nutritional values it looks at are protein, carbohydrates, fat and fiber. The new program takes some of the guess work out of eating right. I decided not to utilize their online program however largely because I prefer to use cash and don’t want to link my debit card up for monthly fees.

While this is much better than the old plan I wish there was much less emphasis on “fake” foods…imitation butter comes to mind…seriously it cannot be good for you…and artificial sweeteners really folks? (although I am a diet soda addict which is something I plan to address in the near-future).

The other reason is that the online tracker while is very good. Isn’t as simple and awesome to use as the one at MedHelp.org (click the logo). I especially like that all the weight related trackers show up on one concise page along with journal entries…which makes looking back a breeze. I don’t have to reference other pages to find my journal entries.

MedHelp also offers trackers for a number of other health related issues including allergies, blood pressure, diabetes, and so on. These show up in tabs on the same page as the weight tracker so you can track all your medical information in one place if you need to. They also have a food tracker as well but it isn’t as user friendly as the next resource I like to use.

I use LiveStrong for its extensive databases. I think it has the best nutritional information database out there. Basic membership is free there are subscription memberships for customizable plans. I think their food tracker (My Plate) is hands down the best out there it breaks everything down so you know where you are at from a nutritional standpoint. Right now I am only tracking my food intake the old fashioned way – pen and paper. Eventually, as I get more disciplined (and my workout routine more solid) I plan on once-a-day to start entering my food data in LiveStrong’s My Plate program and my exercise as well to get an idea of where I stand from a nutritional stand point.

I know it may sound odd to double up on programs but it is all about educating myself. WW is a great program it is simple to use but it is easy to get wrapped up in points totals an lose sight of the actual figures going into it and calories still count especially when one is exercising up a storm.

Which I have started doing. The flu derailed me a bit and I am edging back in slowly. I am totally loving this DVD.

I know there are a lot of Biggest Loser haters out there but I like Bob Harper. He doesn’t totally annoy me but if he bugs you skip it and find something/someone that works for you.

If you are wanting new DVDs but aren’t sure what/which personality you will like, check out collagevideo.com – where you can preview a small sample of various workout DVDs. I love the preview option because in the past I have stopped using DVDs for the simple reason the instructor’s voice was annoying.

The above DVD also happened to be on sale at the time, I had a gift card to Target and it came with a free year-long subscription to Fitness magazine. So for $10 I got a DVD and a subscription – which is a really good deal. I am enjoying the magazine and am starting to incorporate some of their exercises into my fitness regimen (which I will discuss some other time).

I am also currently buying (in store) Shape magazine for their five month bikini body workout. Not that I am planning on being in a bikini by June but it is a great core strengthening workout.

I also purchased a 10lb. kettle bell and a set of three resistance bands at Marshals for $10 each. I picked up some 3lb. weights at K-Mart for just under $7.00 and my brother gave me his old dumbbells (8lb and 10lb) – I love free!

Another important element in weight loss is sustainability which requires variety to prevent boredom and with that is planning future purchases and starting a wish list and here is mine:

I am also wanting to pick up this one, because really who wouldn’t want to?

As far as equipment goes I would like some medicine balls, a weight bench, a step, and a stability ball.

For food/diet, because let’s face it if we get bored with our diets or deprive ourselves we give up…so with that in mind I would like the following cookbooks.

I selected this one largely because almost every recipe is basically previewed on a show of the same name on Lifetime. I don’t have cable (and I know it has been around a while) but I catch the show on hulu.com. There was only one recipe that I am skeptical about in the whole book the rest looked fantastic.

*confession: I don't know exactly how tall I am. My driver's license says 5'1" but uh...well...that isn't entirely accurate. When I was 16, I wore heels for my DMV photo and the top of my head was just above the 5'1" mark and that is what they went by. I don't remember how high those heels were either (they weren't over 2" for sure) but I am definitely shorter than 5'1" so my BMI is lower than reality. So methinks I will have Steve measure me - barefoot - and see what we come up with.

Dream “Skinny” Home: Part 2

So in my Dream “skinny” home I would have two bathrooms and a laundry room…a couple weeks ago - before the flu - I did a post on my Dream Master Bath. This week will be all about my dream laundry room.

…okay a closet actually would be fine with me. Right now I go out to our garage there is no place to fold clothes, in summer the garage heats up to 120 degrees, and it smells like exhaust and burned oil – bleh. So I have a dream laundry room and it looks something like this:

The cold…that wasn’t a cold…

…but was the flu. So all the shivering last week that I thought was just a cold in the mist of the Cold…wrong…it is full blown flu. I am still feeling horrible today and it likely will take the rest of the week to get back to “normal.” I am feeling a bit better, hence, why I am up blogging.

On Wednesday night (before my last “shivering” post), I made some of these…

Sorry for the lack of quality photos…I snapped these right before they were devoured. :) I used small, heart cookie cutters and cut almost all the way through the center of each brownie . When you go to break your brownie to bite sized pieces it will leave a small heart for your last bite. Jade loved it.

After we finished our brownies and Lucas was in bed Jade and I busted out some heart shaped, ages three and up, spiral doodlers (I loved my spira-doodle as a kid) I found at Dollar General for, surprise, $1.

The little spiral doodlers kept Jade busy for about an hour…and hour during which Steve made some hot tea and he and I actually had an adult conversation…with the only interruptions being the occasional, “spiral, spiral, spiral”…”swirl, swirl, swirl” coming from the next room.

Friday we woke to this…

I have lived here in the farthest southern reaches of Texas for over 20 years and I cannot remember this much ice. Steve took this photo…at the crack of dawn…when it was still something like 28 degrees outside…with the flu…and he says I am crazy. :/

I hope to be back to “normal” soon so I can share some more of my Valentine’s day crafty projects with you!

Shivering on Favorites Friday.

So I am a wimp when it comes to the cold…but it is really cold and this Texas girl isn’t used to this kind of cold. Jade had a fever earlier in the week and now I am starting to feel a bit bleh. I was going to have a kids valentine tablescape for you today but nope…not gonna happen as hard as I am shivering (which may be chills from an oncoming fever).

I don’t want to go another week without a Favorites Friday and here are my favorites of the week.

Melanie at Pretties and Posies did a great tutorial on making a carnation heart. I think I will be trying it for myself this year. I am my own sweetheart on this one – Steve could care less for a carnation heart.

Nydia from The Evolution of Home has a great idea for non-candy classroom Valentine’s – heart shaped crazy crayons!

Then there was this wonderful post by Susan at Between Naps on the Porch on Valentine, TX and their Valentine re-mailing program…it is awesome so if you didn’t see her post go by and get all the details. I will be trying this one out next year. ;)

Hopefully both kinds of cold will be gone by Monday. Stay safe and warm!

Dream "Skinny" Home: Part 1

Last week: I did a list of what I would buy right now if I were at my goal weight. Now how about some images of what I would buy if we were building our home...cuz that is what I would love to do...build...Steve gives me the look each time and I always respond with this..."Would you rather build a home with me from scratch or remodel a home with me, taking down walls etc?"...to which he either responds..."Do I have to live there?" or *heavy sigh* and leaves the room. He just doesn't share my enthusiasm.

While my personal goal for 2011 is to be a healthy weight, one of our mutual goals is to pay off the last of Lucas’ medical bills (he spent a week in NBICU and was seen by every neo-natal specialist known to man). Once all of that is done, looks like April/May we will begin saving for our own home and figuring out what exactly we want to do – buy and remodel or build.

So, anywho...if we were building here, where we live now, I would so buy some plans like these for a “skinny” house:

I love the little Katrina cottages (KC). This model above is the KC 1080…meaning it is 1080 sq. ft. of living space .

I know it is small…but it is only about 20 sq. ft. smaller than what we are in now…and it has two *functioning* bathrooms – instead of one non-functioning one. That is right we are now starting week four of “camping” in our rental home. Can you see why I am fantasizing about building something new? I am also fantasizing about doing some other things…like hiring our own plumber…to introduce our bathroom floor to a jackhammer.

Back to the happy, fantasy home…

The plans can be purchased through Lowes for $700…but I would likely hire an architect to make some modifications.

Such as to the baths and laundry areas. (You can so tell bathrooms are on the brain right now). I would switch out the laundry/mud room area with the main bath also moving the side entrance forward to about where the toilet is in the main bath.

Well, we had a fun and monkey filled weekend.

The “cupcakes” which were actually frosted banana nut muffins.

Sock monkey centerpieces with baby bananas.

Thank you everyone for all the boy presents…we were seriously lacking in the car and truck department.

He loved his Thomas the Train Piano book…I think the most fought over toy so far.

Thank you for sharing in our monkey business!

Oh, and for anyone interested in the muffin/cupcakes…they were “diet”…made from a mix. I used 1% milk, 1/2 cup egg whites = 1 egg, and 1/2 cup applesauce = 1/4 cup vegetable oil. :) They do taste great and are still moist. The kids gobbled them down without question. I was able to enjoy them completely diet worry free.

Now the eating out, three days in a row? Well we will see how that pans out on Tuesday when I weigh in at my Weight Watchers meeting. ;) I will keep you posted.

Last Minute Birthday Planning

Okay so Lucas’ birthday is this Saturday and well I haven’t planned a party per say…because of the whole can’t use the bathroom thing…I am not too excited about hosting a party…crazy I know.

So we may do something over at my mom’s…like cake…or I might go a bit bigger…for fun.

See I already have two inflatable monkeys…Lucas loves bananas…Lucas climbs like a monkey…he doesn’t leave home with out his little blue monkey…so we are going to have a small last minute monkey party.

I am not doing invitations this year since it is just family.

The centerpieces will be some bunches of these with a sock monkey hanging around.

The image of the sock monkey comes from the cutest online store that sells already made sock monkeys in the classic version and then some like these.

I think they are adorable…but for the party I am going to stick to the classics. If you are interested in your own bright colored monkey check out SockMonkey.net – they also have DIY kits and patterns available if you want to make your own.

Okay so back to the party!

I am thinking about making some sock monkey cupcakes like these…they will actually be frosted banana nut muffins. ;)

It is exciting to think about all the clothing options that will be available when I reach goal. My weight-loss buddy Sarah and I are planning to take a road-trip when we reach our goals. Our most likely destination is Austin…to hit the resale boutiques for some unique vintage pieces.

It’s a Conspiracy…

My day didn't exactly go as planned yesterday. The kids woke up on the wrong side of the bed and nap didn't help any. I was settling stuffed animal custody battles and working out the division of their assets (one got the tent and the other the tunnel) all day. I wasn't able to get the Inspiring Image post up that I wanted...*sigh*.

I did however get to play with the new dishes I mentioned.
I had also planned on running to the dollar store for some pink valentine items and to the grocery store for some fresh pink flowers (peonies if they had any) to holiday up my table…but my plans were derailed by a flat tire…*sigh*.

So my tablescape isn’t as finished as I would like but I am still gonna show you the pretty china I picked up. I got two dinner plates, four salad plates and four bread and butter plates for $20.

The pattern is Gold Standard which is funny because the trim is platinum. I snapped up all that I could find…the price was excellent and none of the pieces are chipped or show any wear. I have been watching for some pink china for some time.

I bought the set especially for my daughter, Jade. I will order two more dinner plates (for now) from replacements.com. In order to have four place settings for her fifth birthday. I am hoping that there will be a lot of special memories made with this china.

She was so excited when I opened the box and began unwrapping the plates. She clapped enthusiastically, “I get my own pretties?” Too much fun! Eventually, she will get to take them with her when she leaves home.

I hope to find more pieces while thrifting to round out a collection for her "trousseau", even though china isn't traditionally found in a hope chest. I think that for this purpose six place settings is reasonable and will not be too bulky to move/store. I am also contemplating some pink depression glass fruit bowls or sherbets.

What do you think about establishing a trousseau? great idea or too dorky?

Resolution #2: Check

A quick update on my resolutions and later today I hope to have some inspiring images for you!

#1: Potty training the almost two year old: At a standstill because a pipe broke under our house. Our landlord is out of the country...as in Abu-Dhabi out of the country...when he will return....???...we have been unable to reach anyone to repair the problem and call me crazy but don't think we will hire a plumber...way violates our rental agreement ;)...did I mention we only have one bathroom? Yup...it sucks...

#2: Checked off the list...I joined Weight Watchers last week and tonight was my first week weigh in... I lost 5.2 pounds. Woohoo! Now I am forced to make a new resolution and it is to lose five pounds.

#3: To get the kids to eat more veggies. Deep Dish Veggie Pizza a total hit with everyone! The scared of anything green kid ate cooked spinach and I am still in a little bit of shock.

#4: To get more organized: Stalled a bit this week...as my new workout regiment becomes more established and the meal planning more intuitive, I will get back with it. I did tackle Mt. St. Toy-plosion...and donated a trunk load of plastic, migraine inducing toys to Goodwill. God bless the mama that has to deal with them now!

Upcoming Fun Stuff:
Okay so I am being hounded by someone to post pics of the kids...I will try to get some up this weekend.
I bought some "new" china for a song...so I will be setting a Valentine's Day table for two. :)

Favorite Friday

Welcome for another edition of Favorite Friday. Here was what I loved this week from the blogosphere!

Daniele is Nesting talked about being on the Guilt Rollercoaster. Let me say it is nice to know that I am not the only person that walks around doing this in Target. ;)

Does anyone else love Flower Patch Farmgirl's Grocery Store Confessional? Maybe it is that I love Shannan's blog in general but something about her sharing her meal planning is so our collective online BFF.

Then there is the deep pondering question we have all been faced with…”How many place settings should I buy?” I know I am not alone in ponderings such as these or Susan at Between Naps on the Porch wouldn’t have done an entire blog post on the subject – right?.

And finally, Moon to Moon, got me thinking a lot about the details. Her “rant” as she calls is a similar issue that I have been dealing with…and it goes back to that guilt rollercoaster we were talking about earlier. ;)

Nursery Bedding Ideas

My friend Tiff is having a baby in a few months and she is searching for crib bedding. Here is a quick look at her inspiration image.

Tiff is planning on painting the walls a muted harvest gold and wants the bedding to include pink, teal and yellow - love! She would like to get a similar quilt, bumper, skirt, and sheet for around $200. Here are my ideas Tiff!

Putting it together

For the bedding I would recommend going with a reversible blanket from the etsy store fingers & toes.
I suggest the two fabrics from Kumari Garden, Teja in Pink(#3) for the front and Tara in Sun(#4) for the reverse. I also recommend Tiff order their custom crib sheet as well. I like the Bliss Bouquet Teal for the sheet. The blanket is $55 and the sheet is $40.

To save some money I would recommend also going with retail bedding for the crib skirt and the bumper. The bumper(#2) is $30 and the hot pink crib skirt (#4) is $39.I recommend customizing the skirt by purchasing a yard of Tara in Sun and sewing a 2" border around the bottom of the skirt. It is available here for $8.50/yd. To give the bumper a more custom look new 2 1/2" ties can be made and hand stitched to the off-the-rack bumper. The Teja in Pink would be perfect for this, it is also $8.50/yd and available here.

The total comes out to $181 + shipping which shouldn't push the total too far above Tiff's budget.

The teal pillow is just too cute and is available at Urban Outfitters it is only $28.

Oh and the left over yardage from customizing the bedding could be used to make a cute bird mobile like this one...how fun is that!

Living Room Changes

Today was the perfect day to photograph the living room...it is slightly overcast today. I won't discuss the weather here because it might make you a little jealous. ;)

So here as I promised yesterday are some of the changes to the living room I have been working on. First the before:

This is an old photograph of the room...and there have been many changes since I hung the vintage maps on the wall.

New additions of white canvas tab top drapes...the Chinese garden seat I picked up for a steal. But the most recent change is that the white desk has been traded out for a small curio cabinet.

The curio has been sitting in our bedroom until this week keeping my antique teacups out of the reach of little hands...but I am needing the desk to serve as my sewing table.

The accessories that are in the curio are largely keepsakes, sea shells picked up during our honeymoon, the communion plate, toasting goblets and cake topper from our wedding, and the willow tree figurines.

The books are some I have picked up from the thrift store for their colors. My entire sea-star collection is housed in the curio (some real, some faux pottery-barn). I also have a small collection of green glass bottles which are sitting next to an apothecary filled with sea-glass and some small shells. Around the bottom willow tree piece are some aluminum sea shells I got on clearance years ago at Marshal's and have been sitting in a

closet.

The top shelf is largely empty at the moment. The glass shelves are fixed and cannot be moved and any item displayed on the top shelf has to be small to be seen. I am toying with the idea of glass fishing floats (the small cylinder style) for the top glass shelf and possibly a round one to hang out on the middle shelf beside the cake topper and the starfish.

I am also working on the top of the curio. I am thinking about some more blue/green books and possibly something along these lines:

Resolutions Update…and…Inspiring Images

1) Potty training of the little gremlin…uh…well he is insisting to me that he is a baby - patting his little chest…”baby”. Stinkin’ cute but later he will be patting his chest saying, “big boy”, when it is more conducive to him.

2) To lose five pounds…well not there yet. But tomorrow I am re-joining Weight Watchers. So probably this time next week I will merrily on my weigh (punny). Oh and I also purchased a 10lb kettle bell for $10 at Marshalls – which is a major steal by the way.

3) To get the kids to eat more vegetables…I didn’t say they had to know they were there…hehe…they are happily eating veggies blissfully unaware they are there in sauces, hamburgers, meat loaf, etc.

4) To get more organized! This is the one that I have been focusing on…mainly because it has the benefit of immediate gratification for one’s hard work. I don’t have pictures to share today…because we spent much of our weekend in the garage, sorting and sifting through our piles of junk…or treasures.

As soon as I can get some decent lighting I will take some photos of the changes in my living room.

Favorite Fridays

I have changed my blog up a bit…I hope you like the feathered touches! Another change that is starting today is I am no longer going to be doing Etsy Favorite Fridays…instead it is just going to be Favorite Fridays…that way I am not only limited to Etsy but now I can favorite you, my bloggy friends.

And Kara had us laughing at her “nightmare” as she was cleaning her studio (where she does her floral arranging) and came across…a dead bug. In all honesty, though, I have my four year old clean up dead bugs for me (if Steve isn’t around)…I totally sympathize Kara!

I realize I am a bit odd…that vermin happen to top my favorites. Go figure.

So I need some input here…should I make y’all a features button? (No not about vermin). Something about being a MyTexasNest Favorite?

Inspiring Images: Blue Bohemian

Well as I have been going through my home and poking through all our belongings I have found some things I forgot I had...and...

my mom is doing the same thing at her house...and I am getting some of her cast offs...woohoo!

They are getting me thinking...about moving in a different direction with my house...which is already taking a decidedly more eclectic track than I ever imagined when I started this blog.

Those treasures along with these inspiring images below (of my favorite color) are stirring within me a desire to go more boho....

Oh and those treasures I have rediscovered in my own home and my mom is passing on to me well here they are:

From my mom's house...it was a gift to my dad from a student along with a white embroidered tunic (no pics of it yet - sorry).

It is hard to tell from these images that these are Indian saris...love...I actually wore the white one for a play I was in as a child...which is why mom asked if I wanted it.

The blue/green one is going in the living room/dining room somewhere.

Organization Progress

The largest issue in our house is the lack of organization. Why are we so disorganized? Well there are a whole lot of reasons. Probably the most concise reason is that when we moved into our house I was on bed rest…and I didn’t get to start organizing from scratch.

My husband’s strategy for packing household belongings largely involves a box of trash bags. Then there is the issue that while I loved the help my house was unpacked by other people who were directed by me in a state of pre-eclampsia, high-blood pressure induced fog. Needless to say organization wasn’t top on my list.

The kitchen has been my biggest source of frustration since we moved in. We have no pantry…and it drives me nuts. So the last two weeks have been spent revamping one area of my kitchen into a proper pantry. It is still a work in progress but it is getting there.

First up is the bottom part of the “pantry”. We purchased the file cabinet a couple years ago and it has been in use here from some time. I will show you the drawers in another post. The wire shelving unit is new. Eventually the excess paper towels and tissue will be stored in a hall closet and the shelves will be reserved for baking supplies. But this is already a vast improvement.

Next is the counter top area…I hate the countertops by the way but as we rent there is little I can do about it. :( To corral the junk that accumulates I am using a tray I got as part of a bath gift set. It is deep enough to hide the mess and the emergency flashlights from Lucas. I used to have the cookbooks lined up next to the micro but it looked cluttered. So I moved them…

…here to the top shelf. I don’t reference them often and when I do it isn’t a problem to bust out the step-ladder. The canned goods are mostly hurricane supplies…I start stocking up in December as things go on sale matching the discount up with coupons. It is much less stressful than fighting the crowds and much more affordable. I try to have enough to last us two weeks. We will be brimming by June 1st.
I had been stacking smaller cans on top of bigger ones and it just looked untidy. The wire shelves make grabbing what I need so much easier.

I also have a tendency to stockpile items we use a lot of again when they go on sale and I have a coupon…I save a lot of money this way. If you are looking for great ways to save on your grocery budget there are a ton of great blogs but one I reference most often is Money Saving Mom.
The wire shelves make a huge difference, before the mix packets and the dried beans were stored in two of these white baskets. The shelves provide a bookend for the mix packets and the upper shelf a place to store our dried beans. I reused one of the plastic baskets to store our vitamins, cough drops and other frequently use medications.

The Angel Wing

Well I am finally getting around to showing you the angel wing I created before Christmas but was delayed in showing you by funerals, my father's illness and surrounding drama/issues, and then the normal holiday craziness.

I have been wanting a wing similar to this one for several years.

They are no longer available through pottery barn but there are of course original angel wings floating (ha punny) around in antique stores, fairs, and online. I am not one to buy anything too costly that I desire on a whim. I am far more likely to attempt making which ever item I am longing for or wait patiently for an amazing deal.

Quite by accident I came across a blog, Honeydew Productions, while poking through a linky party. She had made her own pair of angel wings out of cardboard. Her tutorial is here. I decided to give it a try. Here are the results:

It took a while to figure out where to hang it. I brought it out to show an artist friend of mine to get her input and leaned it on this wall in my living room. It found its home.

It is about six feet tall and weighs about maybe a pound. I made my wing from foam instead of cardboard. Largely because I was unable to locate an appliance box of any sort. Both our Lowes and Home Depot crush their boxes. So I started to think about what I could buy inexpensively that would work.

Before all the distractions I promised a tutorial...I didn't take pictures of the actual wing in process...because will I didn't know if it would work...and I worked on it over the course of a week during kids nap times and after their bed time. So I decided to show you the same steps on a much smaller project and scale.

Supplies:

Foam presentation board (I got six sheets at Dollar Tree)

Tissue Paper (I am using left overs from Christmas

Elmer's School Glue

Acrylic Craft Paints

The colors I used are Flat Black, Antique Gold and Pure Gold all are from WalMart.

A knife I use an old kitchen knife instead of an exacto knife.

Scissors (I use children's safety scissors for most non-sewing projects - weird I know)

Paint brushes: one for glue and one for paint.

Steps 1 and 2: Tracing and Cutting
Trace your pattern onto the board. For the wing I worked from the larger feathers at the top and bottom to the smaller feathers in the center. I drew the feathers freehand but if you aren't crazy like me you might like to create a paper template first.

I did each feather separately...draw a pattern and then cut it out. The feather would get laid down on top of the foam board and I would draw the next feather...then cut it out...etc

Tips for cutting foam board:

Score the board first carefully tracing the lines with your knife. Don't try to saw through the board the paper will crumple and tear.

Then go back over it pressing more firmly to cut through the other side.

Step 3: Feather the edges

With Scissors carefully go over each edge and cut away any jagged edges and slightly round the edges of each feather. I did this to get rid of hanging paper or any torn edges...it also added some extra texture to the edges as if it had been carved.

Step 4: Assembly

Again starting from outside - in I laid out the pieces as a big puzzle then I started gluing pieces together this time inside to out or top to bottom. I let the entire wing dry over night.

Step 5: Decoupage

I mixed small batches of glue diluted with water so it was easily brushed on. I would first brush the piece then tear some tissue paper, lay it on and then brush more glue. I went over the piece like this twice.

Then I let it dry, over night again.

Step 6: Base Coat

I painted the entire wing black and let it dry overnight.

It doesn't have to be perfect...some of the white can show through.

Step7: The Pretty

I then dry brushed the entire wing with the antique gold paint and let it dry for about 30 minutes.

I then went over the piece again also dry brushing but with the pure gold paint this time feathering the paint from the inside of each feather to the outside. The larger concentration of paint is on the inside of each feather - where wear and tear are less likely to have naturally occurred.

I am working on some new changes to the living room and will show you soon...as well as some organization I have been doing in the kitchen.

Making New Friends:

There is nothing wrong with my old friends (lol) just looking forward to adding some new peeps to add to the fold. ;). That includes bloggy friends too...I cannot tell you how much some of your emails have meant to me...Thank you all!

Reconnecting with Old/Lost Friends:

I invited a college friend over for New Years...and we had a blast. She was my editor...we used to argue over... ellipses and - dashes. I was a creative writer she was much more technical. It is funny she is now a creative writer and my writing has become much more boring.

Getting out of debt:

We have come close several times over the last ten years and then bang - lay offs, and babies being born by emergency c-section and their subsequent extended stays with luxuries such as ~~UV treatments~~ tanning beds (Jade) and a week long stay in ~~NBICU~~ the lap of luxury with daily massages from attentive ~~nurses~~ attendants (Lucas). We in fact are still making payments on our almost two year old Lucas model. We seriously buckled down in 2010 and we can see the light at the end of the tunnel...Lord willing we will reach daylight by March/April...possibly sooner...depending on how much Jade's cavities set us back.

Vacation:

So this year (I think), Steve will qualify for five weeks paid vacay. Can anyone say road trip? or how about second honeymoon?

New Year's Resolutions

I am setting the bar low this year...to easily attainable goals...and will reset new goals throughout the year.

1) To get my youngest gremlin potty trained.

2) To lose five pounds ( I need to lose way more than that but I am going to choose to focus on the first five).

3) To get the kids to eat more vegetables - this one might be a bit lofty.

4) To get "more" organized...and this can get broken down into very specific projects. I decided the biggest home decor project of the year is going to be getting organized (which also means purging and really honing in on what it is I love)

I have already started working on this resolution too.

My first project was to organize my table linens (I got some new things for Christmas) and I have finished the organizing part...some napkins are in the drier as I write but they will be folded and put into their respective piles.

The first drawer:

You can see two of my Christmas gifts here the wooden flatware storage box is one I got with a Christmas gift card and my registry flatware finally has a proper home - whew. The other gift was the snowflake tablecloth peeking out on the right side. My brother got it for me.

Above the box you can see my napkin ring assortment and on top of the box is a linen runner I picked up at a garage sale.

Here are my tablecloths and white napkins (of which I have 24). The white tablecloth and 12 of the napkins are some I picked up as a lot in an estate sale (along with the napkin rings in the previous pic) all for $5. The tablecloth and napkins were stained but a little bleach took care of that. :) The other white napkins are some I got for a wedding gift.

Then you can see I have some other terracotta napkin rings and a little bunny tucked above the tablecloths. What can I say I am getting ready for spring table settings. ;)

The second drawer:

My colored napkins are stacked to the left, I have quite the assortment. Some extra candlesticks hang out in here and I decided to house my chargers (I got eight new silver ones the day after Christmas) and some of my serving trays. You can see a box in the back behind the napkins, it holds the cake knife and server from our wedding.

Future organizational projects include and likely in this order or at least started in this order.

-The Garage...we are so having a garage sale. We are going to be unloading our baby gear and then the usual stuff. Work on the garage begins this weekend. Woohoo!

-The hall closet

-The bathroom linen closet

-The dressing room

-The kitchen - another project I have started on but will show you once more progress is made. I am doing as the Nester and organizing a vast array of things into square baskets. So far it is working fairly well - our plastics are corralled into a basket now and there isn't a avalanche of lids falling on me each time I open the cabinet.

-The play room

I got a gift card to Lowes and have decided to use it to paint Jade's old pink room - gray. It will be my dressing room/guest room/where Jade sleeps for now until we finish moving the kids into a shared room.

Christmas Blessings

I hope you all had a very Merry Christmas. I am busy cleaning and organizing (getting a jump on those New Year's resolutions) and am thinking about sharing my progress.

I am leaning toward dressing room - because it will force me to do some purging (kids clothes/toys) and get ready for a garage sale.

Distractions

My dad is in the hospital and there are some other things facing our extended family at the moment. Those things with our normal hectic plus Christmas may leave me little time for blogging until Christmas is over.

Anniversary Table Setting

We got back from Houston late Sunday, and I spent Monday resting up from the long weekend and drive. Last night I decided to play with a table setting for our 9th anniversary; we are celebrating this week.

Steve and I have a thing with anniversary and Christmas presents...he almost always gets a new or renewed subscription to an online game (WoW, Left4Dead)...and I go and buy my own gifts.

This year I picked up the bell jar/clotch (Marshals, $7.99) and six mercury glass votive cups (Target, $.99ea). Under the clotch is some more of the frosted rosed from our wedding displayed in a cruet tray that is missing its bottles. I am bummed that now that I have a clotch I wasn't able to participate in Marty's Clotch party last week.

I am using our registry pattern, Lenox Courtyard Platinum. I received two place settings and a few of the blue accent plates. The pattern has been discontinued and although I love it I have elected not to finish out the collection. It is lovely but my tastes have changed subtly over the last 10 years, since first picking the pattern.

Obviously, some things don't change...I love the colors blue, cream and silver...but I am drawn more to simpler patterns now. Plus there is something special about having a pattern reserved for just Steve and I.

The flatware is also my registry pattern...Oneida, Frost. I have a full place setting for 12.

I need to pick up some protective sleeves or a case though as they are starting to show some scratches

The cut glass goblets are some I picked up at the 99 cent store for, well, $1 each. The simple goblets are some that I received from my BFF for my 30th birthday (thanks girl). The candlesticks are the same ones you see all the time and were a wedding gift from my mom-in-law. The runner is one I picked up from the thrift for about $3. It will eventually become a couple of Christmas stockings (for next year).

I am trying some flameless candles in the votive cups. I didn't like how the faux wax tips looked so I decided to fill the votive cups with some "accent crystal" vase filler (Dollar Tree, $1). It looks like chipped ice.

Inspiring Images: Gilt and Gray

Well I finished the angel wing...and I am working up a tutorial but you will have to wait to see it.

I mentioned yesterday that one of Steve's uncles passed away and we will be heading out to go to his funeral on Thursday. I am busy trying to get the details squared away; lodging, packing, babysitters, etc.

So I don't know how much blogging I am going to get to this week...but I don't want to leave you hanging with the last post so here are some beautiful images of gilt on gray.

Fog

This weekend there was a death in my husband's family - his uncle. A melancholy state has settled about like a fog suspended in air. The sun still shines but its light is diffused by the mist.

Just holding on to the fact that the most foggy day always give way to beautiful clear blue skies.

The angel wing is assembled and has been given a base coat of black paint.

I didn't inadvertently adhere myself to it of which I am glad.

She was inspired by Let it Shine who made some 8' tall wings although I don't know the details on how she made hers.

I am inspired and I can't shake it from my head...and you know what that leads to - I am going to try to make my own. Only one wing though, the left wing. I know myself well enough to know I will not have the patience to create two huge cardboard wings.

So if I disappear over the weekend and early next week...you will know that A) I am still working on the wing, B) I have accidentally glued myself to a giant angel wing, or C) I am done but in a semi-catatonic state and watching an angel movie marathon:

Advent Activities: Day 1 and an Announcement

Last year on December 1st we started decorating the family Christmas tree. This year I am not putting it up since Lucas is in the get into everything stage and our artificial tree is already bent. I wanted to do something tree related so tonight we made edible trees.

Supplies:

We are studying shapes this week at home - which by the way Christmas is a great time to teach and reinforce shapes with preschoolers... presents (squares & cubes), ornaments (circles & spheres), stars, conifer trees (triangles & cones).

You can get as creative as you want with these. I just used what I had on hand. ;)

Inspiring Images: Advent Candles

We are doing an advent "wreath" this year. It provides a great teaching opportunity for the kids. Each Sunday we are lighting a candle in anticipation of Christmas.
Of course many churches in the States practice the lighting of the advent wreath, but it isn't common practice in our homes. In Scandinavian homes they are fairly common - at least that is my understanding as I am not Swedish or Norwegian or anything remotely close.

So last Sunday (November 28th) we lit our first candle and discussed Hope a bit. I wanted to also sing a traditional Hymn but the kids attention spans being what they are...we didn't.

We are using five candles instead of four and all white instead of purple and rose (traditional colors).
Although I may swap out the center candle for a pillar before Christmas Eve (me being fickle again).

You can see where we lit the one on the left. I didn't leave it on long with an almost two year old about.

Holiday Bar "Cart"

On Friday, Artie from Color Outside the Lines did an amazing inspiration post on bar carts. The only area I have that is good to store and display our bar area is the old armoire off our dining area.

I am still playing around with the very top of the armoire. I promise you will get to see it in the finished room tour I plan to do.

In keeping with the other side of the room I stuck with the white and silver color scheme and am again re-using a number of wedding decorations.

The bottles are inside a server (sans casserole dish) largely to protect them from the grab-by little hands of a certain toddler. It is working thus far.

The crystal punch bowl was purchased for my wedding as were the white frosted roses. The silver ornaments are some that haven't seen the light of day since we started having kiddos. The white glittered ornaments are actually foam ornaments purchased specifically for their non-breakable properties. Albeit they are pretty dented and missing glitter in some places (perfect for bowl filler).

I think this is my favorite vignette and am kinda sad I couldn't get a better shot.

The apothecary was a thrift store find for $1 and the little tree inside I picked up at a dollar store for 50 cents (they discounted because there were supposed to be two in the pack).

The silver tree I made from wired tinsel from Dollar General (love the stuff) and some thick repurposed kraft paper.

The white scarf is another thrift store find I got for $1 at their Black Friday 50% off sale.

The dishes are my registry china. We only have two place settings of it - and we use it on our anniversary. (You bet there will be a tablescape).

The little white trees are some I picked up at Dollar Tree 2/$1.

I love angel wings...must be the feathers...but I have been watching for some for several years.

I have kicked myself for not buying some that I have seen at Tuesday Morning and Big Lots.

When I was at Dollar General I saw these ornaments. I couldn't pass them up. I think they will become part of my everyday decor and not only for Christmas.

They of course are much, much smaller than those in my inspiration photos. I think they may end up in my dressing room or in my entryway.

Winter Wonderland

The feather tree I posted about here is up and decorated along with some other Christmas treasures.

I love these little trees in the foreground. They were part of my wedding decor. Yup, I am one of those ~~crazy~~ people who get married in December. The advantage is that each year as I pull out my Christmas trove I get to relive the memories. Which are even sweeter this year as 10 years ago we got engaged and were beginning to plan it all out.

The advent calendar is one I picked up on clearance at Target the day after Christmas last year. I think I paid under $8 for it. I don't have any treats in it - yet.

The tree is incredibly hard to photograph against the window. I think it needs a few more ornaments. I have some glass snowflakes somewhere but at the moment they elude me.

The solid white snowflake ornaments on the tree were given as favors at my wedding.

The snowflake with a jingle bell at the bottom I got at our local Dollar General as well as all the glass ball ornaments. The silver fabric snowflakes are some I picked up several years back at Marshals.

Here it is all put together. I hung the larger snowflakes from safety pins on my curtains. The scarf is one my brother's girlfriend made for Steve. He won't be wearing it this year - sorry sweetie. ;)

Our front door isn't immune from the winter wonderland treatment. All of these snowflakes were purchased at Dollar General or the 99cent store. I simply wired them together with some 24 gauge wire. The whole thing was $7 and the kids love it because at night a couple of them light up and flash blue.

Christmas Craft: Feather Tree

Yes, another feather post - sorta. For several years now, largely thanks to Country Living, I have been wishing for a feather tree. See what I mean:

The past two years Santa and Steve have failed to come through on this wish. This year I decided to be my own elf...and craft myself up a feather tree. A Google search turned up this tutorial on Jane Avion - love.

I kinda winged it though and didn't follow the instructions to the letter. Here is my tree below...it turned out okay; we will see how long it holds up.

If you want to attempt this yourself here are my pointers.

1) Follow the tutorial to the letter.

2) Wear safety goggles - I sliced my nose during the making of this tree.

3) If you can't find the right gauge at the craft store, check Lowes or Home Depot.

4) When wrapping the yarn start with the bottom branches and work your way up.

Steve finished his 26.2 miles.

He kinda hurt his knee.

He is otherwise no worse for wear.

I didn't get any good photos because my camera sucks.

I broke the rules and sneaked past some "guards" to be at the finish line when Steve passed through.

The kids had fun hanging with their grandpa and grandma as I was breaking the law.

I may start training again. I never got to run my marathon. Pregnancy messed me up - Thanks Lucas!

Rock N' Roll San Antonio

My husband, Steve, has been training to run the Rock N' Roll Marathon in San Antonio. The kids and I are tagging along for moral support and to see Steve's dad - an early Thanksgiving of sorts.

Brief local history lesson:

The "original" Iwo Jima statue sits in my hometown of Harlingen, Texas; it is the gypsum plaster mold that was used to cast the bronze version that sits in Washington, D.C.

Harlingen was selected for several reasons to be the home of the original mold. The most important reason being Iwo Jima flag raiser, Harlon Block (# 10 below).

The Weslaco Eight

Harlon Block is seen here along with seven of his fellow Weslaco Panther football teammates and some other local boys (from Harlingen and Donna) being sworn into the Marine Corp in San Antonio.

Corporal Block lost his life in the battle of Iwo Jima in the days following the flag raising. He is buried along side the Iwo Jima monument in Harlingen, Texas.

If you ever find yourself flying into Harlingen International Airport the monument is next door at the Marine Military Academy. The private college preparatory academy maintains the memorial.

The Picky Eater Thanksgiving: Year Two

Last year I tried to kid-friendly a traditional Thanksgiving dinner offering options that could be served plain for some and topped with caramelized onions for others. I also tried dressing muffins to see if they would peak the picky one's interest.

She ate the "chicken", mashed potatoes, and jellied cranberry sauce. The dressing muffins had "green spot" otherwise known as celery and went untouched.

Since last year we have progressed to eating green things. She now likes zucchini, broccoli, and raw spinach. It is an ongoing thing but we are getting there.

What is still a no go are casseroles, soups and stews. I surmise that it is because it can be difficult to identify the individual ingredients and that they have a tendency to be a bit beige.

The strategy for the dinner is similar to last year - simple, fun, kid-friendly shapes. I will not be sautéing mushrooms or caramelizing onions this year for the green beans and mashed potatoes. This years extra flavor is coming from something we all love - bacon.

Well actually I bought the pie crust and we made the filling. We had a blast and so this year Jade and I will make the crust and filling following the recipe in the back of the book. I love the little etsy shop, Cottage Farm, for several reasons; the vintage wares are beautiful and the photo styling is well done. The thing I like most is the unique categories. Instead of the expected "kitchen, antiques, accessories" category labels, shop owner, Krissy has in essence created mini-stores within Cottage Farm. Each mini-store has its own unique perspective.

I picked a favorite item out of each of her well edited collections. This was extremely hard as in all honesty I wish I had the monetary resources to buy up her entire store.

$50 Thanksgiving Tablescape

I have been obsessing over feathers as of late, thanks to a linen fabric remnant I picked up a couple weeks ago. After finding the inspiration images in yesterday's post, I went to Hobby Lobby to look for pheasant feathers for a centerpiece. I seriously love my life at moments, because...

...feathers were 50% off! I should change my blog name to "My Serendipitous Nest" as much of the items I seem to pine over seem to land in my lap almost as soon as I think them (as was the case here and here). I purchased five bags of feathers for $5.

I knew I wanted to make some feather spheres and picked up some Styrofoam balls at the Dollar Tree - a pack of two for $1. I already had the large styro-ball at home. The small spheres came out to $1.50 ea and the large one $2.

I knew that I wanted a table runner of some kind. I wanted pattern and definitely something that would coordinate with the feathers I purchased. I was strolling through the thrift looking for a purse to anthro-knock off. I saw this plaid scarf and pounced. The price was $2.98. I pulled out three of my silverplate candlesticks (a gift from my mom-in-law several years back) to add some interest and height to the centerpiece.

The larger sphere was much easier to make. It took me about five or six hours over the course of three evenings to complete all five.

The napkins I picked up at the thrift on the same trip I got the scarf/runner. They were a perfect match to the turquoise stripe in the plaid. They were $1.98 for four. I found the napkin rings for 50 cents for the set of four at an estate sale. I snapped up the chargers at the 99 cent store for $1 ea.

Tonight, I went back in the hopes of getting some glass tumblers I walked into the store 15 minutes to closing and found these aqua tumblers - love! Coincidently, I also picked up the white porcelain plates there for $1 ea. I spent $24 on eight sets of dinner plates, salad plates and soup bowls.

Inspiring Images: Feathered Table

If last year's obsession was ballet, the this year's is going to be feathers. It started with this remnant I found.

It is linen and I have about a yard and a half of it. I am searching for coordinating fabric to make some throw pillows for my living room.

With feathers on the brain I searched for feather holiday décor; be forewarned, this holiday season is going to be a bit feathery.

Now, I do know these silhouettes are adorable...

...but as sweet as the gesture is - I didn't need a real mouse hole! Besides, aren't mouse holes in baseboards a bit cliche? Aren't you just fueling negative stereotypes about mice?

Or was it that you were trying to "help me" keep up with Kasey of Lola B's, as she posted last week about her own mouse-y adventures? Thanks but no thanks! Maybe you should have considered timing your entrance with baked goods like her little mouse did - just saying.

Inspiring Images: Autumn Picnic

We got our first real, cool front today and it is a nice cool 60 some degrees outside now. It, of course, will warm up some to the 70s but is still a welcome change; yesterday's high was 92. With it now feeling officially like autumn the desire to spend more time outdoors is growing. The lower temps should hold (crossing fingers) 'til this Saturday and I plan on a family picnic. I only wish I had a vintage station wagon to tailgate in - *sigh*.

Halloween Fun

We were off our game yesterday and didn't get any really good photos of the kids in their costumes.

Steve got these shots as I was rushing around getting our gear together. They were uncooperative and I thought I would be able to get better shots on the street...I was wrong. We were too busy having fun and forgot to get the camera out of the car...oops.

Jade went as Kai-lan. She originally wanted to be Iron Man and then a Native-American and then a Disney Fairy and then the day of Halloween wants to wear this dress. I could have pulled off any of those selections at the last minute considering the crazy amounts of dress up clothes we have on hand. This particular dress is one, that Steve's "little" cousins passed down to her. Thank's guys!

This was Lucas' first year trick-or-treating and he had a blast. His Clark Kent costume was a hit with everyone over 20. He actually kept the glasses on to my amazement. I think he was in shock that total strangers were giving him candy.

Hope everyone had as much fun as we did.

Pumpkin Patch

The kids were restless and wanted to play on the playground.

The sun started to dip and the kids went from restless to cranky in mere seconds.
